3. Cargill Refinery The beginning... Wheat is coarsely milled and the flour mixed with water to separate vital wheat gluten. From the various grades of starch, a very pure grade of starch is extracted (which can then be converted into glucose syrups) and the remainder is sent to an on-site distillery as a fermentation stock for the production of alcohol. After the fermentation and distillation of the alcohol, a distillery liquor rich in energy and protein is combined with the digestible fibre and starch plus a small percentage of a high energy glucose stream.
